Migration of Forums to https://forums.image.sc

Postby jmoore » Mon May 20, 2019 12:39 pm

Last December, we closed the Bio-Formats forums on this site in favor of the Discourse-based forums.image.sc. Initially a merger of the ImageJ forums and the CellProfiler forums [3], image.sc has grown to include at least 20 different projects from the imaging community.

Bio-Formats was a natural choice for testing an initial migration, since a number of questions were already being asked with the bio-formats tag. Since then, the omero tag has started to receive more traffic and, more recently, an omero-figure tag has been created!

With this in mind, we’re planning to shut down this forum in favor of image.sc.

We won’t immediately be turning off https://www.openmicroscopy.org/community/. The general plan is:
  • to turn off the creation of new topics by the end of this week
  • to set the forums to read-only by the end of the month
  • at the same time, we’re looking into migrating the forums content to image.sc
  • and at some point in the future, when all URLs redirect to image.sc, we’ll turn off the forums.

However, you are welcome to start using the image.sc forums right now. And as a part of that image.sc community, you should feel comfortable creating whatever tags you feel are appropriate. Plus, the Discourse platform has a number of configuration options that we think will make using it preferable to this forum (not to mention there is also an app for both Android as well as iOS [8]).

If you have any concerns, you can let us know either here or on the related image.sc thread. For the OME team, though, having the forums hosted externally on a more modern and secure platform means we have more time to spend answering your questions. We also hope that using forums.image.sc is both more enjoyable and facilitates chats with the wider imaging community.

All the best,
~Josh

P.S. for anyone who also follows the mailing lists, a similar announcement will be forthcoming there as well with the added benefit of your only needing to follow one service in the future.

Happy Friday!

There were no cries of despair this week after the forum migration announcement, as such we're moving forward. A private message was sent to everyone as a general heads up, and an invite for image.sc was sent to everyone who has visited in 2019.

Repeating ourselves from the private message: we've enjoyed your participation here all these years and we look forward to ever more amongst the wider scientific imaging community!

The end is nigh!

Thanks to everyone who has already migrated over to the image.sc forums. For everyone who hasn't, we are currently planning to place the OME mailing lists and the phpbb forums into read-only mode *next week*. If you haven't taken the plunge yet, now's the time. It's a breeze. We look forward to seeing you at https://forum.image.sc/c/data

Have a happy weekend all.
~Josh
