What LINUX server distribution for OMERO and UPS

Postby Aubin.S » Wed Feb 28, 2018 9:49 am

Hi,

I would need advice from people with more experience than I have,

We are currently working on setting up our server on which we want to use OMERO.
To give you a quick overview, we currently have a HP proliant dl360 gen6 as a server and two rack of memory MSA60 (HP) and one D2700 (HP).
We would like to install a LINUX distribution on the server in order to use OMERO.

We are about to buy a UPS for the server (probably an APC smart UPS) and I was wandering if you have any experience with configuring the communication between UPS and server. The main question being : What does that implies in terms of which LINUX distribution we should install on the server ?

In general, do you have any preference on which LINUX distribution to use on a server running OMERO ?

Many thanks,

Aubin.

Hello Aubin,

If you're going the APC road, a cursory look suggests apcupsd [1] exists in at least RHEL based and Debian based package managers, so you should find something.

The OME team use CentOS 7 and as a result anything distro-dependent tends to be done first on CentOS 7, e.g. Ansible driven installation [2] and Docker based OMERO server deployments [3].

That aside, OME do support Debian based distributions for the standard installation workflows, so what I would do in your position would be to find out what type of distribution your local IT support team is happiest supporting. That kind of support can include, e.g. what backup client is in use - which may only be compatible with a particular distribution, or they may prefer installing and maintaining it on the distribution they have experience supporting.

Best,

Kenny
