difficulty using insight to log in to VirtualBox omero

Postby talley » Sun Apr 08, 2012 11:42 pm

Hi,

I'm having difficulty using omero.insight to log into my virtual box omero server. I've read through the relevant instructions on the site:
http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/prod ... _appliance
and various forum posts but I still can't get it to work. here's the details:

I'm running virtualBox 4.1.12 on OS X 10.7.2. I'm able to load the virtual appliance and I can log in to omero inside the virtual box (with root/swordfish or omero/omero) just fine. When I try to login with omero.insight (using "root"/"omero") i get the "failed to log onto omero, check the port or try again later error".

in the virtual box, when I run ifconfig, I do get an eth0 listing with the inet adds: 10.0.2.15 and I've attached a screenshot of the rest of the output here:
Screen Shot 2012-04-08 at 4.30.15 PM.png
Screen Shot 2012-04-08 at 4.30.15 PM.png (50.01 KiB) Viewed 17780 times

for what it's worth, I AM able to ssh into the omero server from the terminal on my host machine using the command: "ssh -p 2222 root@localhost"
also, when I run "sudo lsof -i -P" in the host terminal I do see that virtual box is indeed listening on ports 4064, 4063, 4080 and 2222 as specified in the VirtualBox settings, and no other applications seem to be listening on the same port to cause conflict (no omero.server for instance).

I've tried restarting the virtual box and the host a number of times and I even tried changing the listening port on the host machine to 46064... but still nothing.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you login to the virtual appliance with "omero"/"omero" and then try using the CLI to login as "root"/"omero"? If not, then perhaps OMERO's not running.

You might also take a look at this forum post for more tips:

I am getting this problem too:

I can SSH from the host PC to the VM.

CLI works fine from SSH or VM login.

Any ideas anyone?

So it's not:

JVM version (6 or 7 both cannot connect).
32/64 bit JVM (both cannot connect).
There is nothing appopriate in the insight error log:
2012-05-29 13:26:30,643 ERROR [ ome.system.UpgradeCheck] (nitializer) Error reading from url: http://upgrade.openmicroscopy.org.uk?ve ... orporation "Server returned HTTP response code: 400 for URL: http://upgrade.openmicroscopy.org.uk?ve ... orporation"

An 'strace -f' produced only one error, the 400 one as per the log above.

Now downloading source code to run under a debugger...

Re: difficulty using insight to log in to VirtualBox omero

Postby tusk » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:23 pm

Hi,

I am having the same problem as Simon (however, on a different OS). I installed the omero vm in VirtualBox 4.1.16 under Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit according to the guideline (http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/prod ... _appliance) and downloaded the OMERO.insight client (4.3.3). VirtualBox is correctly configured to forward the ports (did not have to modify anything) and the client is set to connect to localhost on port 4064.

The virtual machine is up and running, the (virtual) ethernet card has been detected and it has an IP address assigned to it (10.0.2.15). I can log onto the server using omero/omero and a quick check using omero admin diagnostics verified that omero is running. However, I am unable to log in using the insight client (with the credentials root/omero - 100% sure that I made no typo). I am constantly getting the following error message:
Code: Select all
Failed to log onto OMERO. Please check your user name and/or password or try again later
Every time I try to connect, virtual box indicates network traffic and hdd access (via the little tray icons) and the Blitz-0 log shows the server actually receiving and handling the login request.
For what it's worth, I am able to connect to the virtual machine using ssh (putty) via 127.0.0.1:2222 without any problem. I have tried disabling the windows firewall and my symantec endpoint protection but this had no effect (still getting the username/password error). I even tried to create a new user using the omero admin commandline method, but that also had no effect. Now I have no more idea what to do in order to solve the problem...

The virtualbox builds are currently using version of omero from the develop branch in git. Meaning that it at times can be a bit unstable and buggy. We should have a 4.3.4 release build virtual machine later today / tomorrow that is more stable and friendly. I'll post a link to the release build once it finishes building.

Available at http://cvs.openmicroscopy.org.uk/snapshots/omero/virtualbox/ is omero-vm-4.3.4.ova, which is a vm export with OMERO.server-4.3.4 vs the head of the develop branch (which is what the documentation previously pointed to). This will hopefully be much more stable and work better than previous builds.
