OMERO.insight 4.4 java version on windows

Postby bulwynkl » Tue Mar 24, 2015 6:43 am

Hi Folks,

Unless I have only java 7 installed on my windows clients I can't get OMERO.insight to connect/authenticate.
We have other apps that would really like to have java 8.

At this point I am guessing I need to point the client at the correct java7 path rather than using the system java_path but I have no inkling on how to achieve that config change - any insight (sic)?

Definitely understood. And certainly with various Java security issues, it makes sense to upgrade to the extent possible.

Likely what's happening is that the ApplicationStub in OMERO 4.4 has a compiled-in registry setting that it's using internally to find Java. We noticed that any installation of Java 8 broke OMERO.insight in 5.0.3 in August 2014 and fixed the issue in 5.0.4 in September 2014.**

However, the fixes were never backported to the 4.4 line. Considering that the last release of OMERO 4.4 is approaching being a year old (4.4.11 in April 2014), I'd definitely suggest upgrading to OMERO5.

All the best,
~Josh.

** Current stable release is 5.0.8 released February 2015 and we hope to release 5.1.0 within a few weeks.
