multiple users managing a shared project/dataset hierarchy

Postby dsudar » Fri Sep 14, 2018 10:04 pm

Hi team,

An important subset of our user base would like to have the following capability and I'm not seeing how that can be accommodated by the OMERO permission system. Am I missing something?

This group of users wants to jointly manage a single Project/Dataset hierarchy where they can all create Projects and Datasets and import images and stuff into that hierarchy. They are currently all members and owners of a read/write group and they created one "data owner" user account in that group (same name as the group) that holds that entire hierarchy. Since they are all owners, they can import data and move it into this "data owner" account's hierarchy (if a Project and Dataset exists) but they cannot create Projects or Datasets in that account's hierarchy. Is there a way to enable that or a work-around that I'm missing? Or is there an entirely different way to achieve this concept where all the data is jointly managed but still retain individual login users?

Thanks,
- Damir

Hi Damir,

Creating a Project in the "data owner's" hierarchy is the same as creating a Project that belongs to "data owner", which we don't yet support in the web/Insight clients.

However, a workaround that might help is to always view "All Members" data instead of using a "data owner".
This way, you will see Projects belonging to all group members and all users will be able to create Projects and Datasets that will show in that hierarchy.

Hopefully that will work OK for you?

Cheers,

Will.

Hi will,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I had considered that workaround as well but hadn't thought it through fully. Let me discuss with the group and see if this can work for them.

Cheers,
