ubuntu 10.10

Postby mahogny » Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:49 am

I am deploying omero on ubuntu 10.10 and running into problems. ice3.3 is no longer supported. installing old packages turns out to be a pain. compiling 3.3 from source breaks.

the new version of g++ does not compile 3.3 anymore because (I take) stdlib has changed. adding
#include <stddef.h>
to suitable places in it seems to overcome the error (but I am compiling as of writing so I don't know if that is all it takes).

bottomline - it's rather messy to install right now. it would be good if you could upgrade to ice 3.4 so we can just use the latest version and packages

Hi mahogny,

I can confirm that zeroc-ice33 is still available via APT on Ubuntu 10.10 using the main ubuntu repositories. This is still probably the easiest install method for ice on Ubuntu.

That said, I can confirm that ice does not always install properly when using other APT repositories. Some of the regional repositories & mirrors appear to have either broken or incomplete (or both) collections of packages. When a similar thing has occurred in the past it has been fixed by changing to the main Ubuntu apt repo, updating, then apt-get install zeroc-ice33. It also helps to install the various OMERO prerequisites individually rather than in a single, long apt command which has occasionally yielded a similar failure to install ice.

Either way, it would be useful if you could tell me which repos you are using as your APT sources. It would also be helpful if you could also tell me the error/failure message you got when trying to install ice.

In response to your query about OMERO support for a newer version of Ice, I believe that support for Ice 3.4 is in the roadplan for OMERO 4.4. Nevertheless Ice 3.3 is supported both by current OMERO software releases and by Ubuntu through to Ubuntu 11.04, notwithstanding the APT repo issues that I believe you have experienced.
