Export to external/remote collaborators

Postby belanna11 » Mon Oct 11, 2010 2:53 pm

Hello - What is the recommended method for sharing data with external collaborators, who will not have access to our omero instance internal on our network. Is there an export command-line utility that can be used? If we simply queried for certain data sets and retrieved jpg's from the database for a simple web site viewer, how would we retrieve the jpg's out of the database? Any ideas along this vein would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I sent yesterday to the ome-users list some sketchy ideas about using OMERO together with the iRODS data management system, here's the list archive entry:
http://lists.openmicroscopy.org.uk/pipe ... 02451.html

I think iRODS might be useful also for this data sharing use. If you have the relevant metadata also in the iRODS system, you could use iRODS tools to find the files you want. Then you would allow your collaborators access to some export area of your iRODS installation. They could do it with their browser, see https://www.irods.org/index.php/iRODS_Browser

If your collaborators also use iRODS, then the two installations could possibly be made to work together with the federation feature, see https://www.irods.org/index.php/federation.

So far this is based just on what I have read and possibly misunderstood about the product, so I cannot say if it would really work, and how much effort would go into it. I hope to get some experience soon.

Best regards,
Harri
